Bali is dramatically mountaineous which is a chain from Sumatra and Java as well. From the west to the east in the central Bali are Mt. Kelatakan, Mt. Sangiang, Mt. Merbuk, Mt. Mesehe, Mt. Musi and Mt. patas which are located in the Bali Barat National park. Then the holly mountain of Mt. Agung and Mt. Batur with lake Batur on the Eastern Part. In the middle are Mt. Batukaru a and Mt. Pohon with some lakes; Buyan, Tamblingan and Bratan.
There is an interesting myth of the holly Mt. Agung and Mt. Batur - the highest active volcanic in the island. It was mentioned that when Bali was not stabil, A god bring a part of Mahameru in India and flied to Bali. In the middle of the journey a part of the mountain was dropped which shaped into Mt. Semeru in Java (the highest one in Java), and then when he reached Bali, the mountain was split into Mt. Agung and Mt. Batur.
On the slope of Mt. Agung - the "mother mountain", was built the mother temple of Pura Besakit.
In spite of the fact that the mountain once gave a big eruption in 1963 killing thousands, it also provides a fertile soil to the surroundings, including in the southern part where people can grow rice, and on the northern part where you can find coffee, coconuts and cattle are cultured.
The most visited highlands of Bali include Bedugul with Lake Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingan which is next to Mt. Pohon. The cool climate also helps the area in growing flowers. Botanical Garden is also located in this area.
Kintamani in Mt. Batur is another area to the west of Bedugul. It offers panoramic of Lake Batur and hot springs around. Pura Batur next to it and Trunyan of Bali Aga village is on the other side of the lake. The unique in here is people let the crops lying under tree but they are sweet-smelling.
Many have hiked Mt. Agung. However if you are inteding to do so, please consult your tour guide or at least pay a visit to the security post guard.
The extreme southern part of Bali is a limestone peninsula. The Bali development has create this "used to be" wasted area into the modern tourism spots such as Nusa Dua or Garuda Wisnu Kencana as well as real estates. |
